The Listeman Arboretum was established in the City of Neillsville in 1966 by Kurt Listeman. The 50 acre site is located on the Black River, southwest of the downtown area, within the city limits.
This unique site offers diverse vegetation, rock out crops, a major waterway and an abundance of natural history.
The Arboretum presents a variety of vegetation communities: Red Oak, Aspen, Maple, Elm, Ironwood, White Birch, Prairie, 31 different types of shrubs and vines and 128 species of wild flowers and herbs. In addition, the Arboretum has a variety of birds and mammals that visit and/or live on the site.
Man's influence is evident on the site. Logging, burning and grazing show their effects on the present vegetation. Diverse plant communities abound, the result of varying topography, soil types and climatic conditions.
